Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, known as Mehrzad, stands at a towering 8ft 0.85in, making him the second tallest man in the world. However, his remarkable stature, which has both shaped his life and posed significant challenges, is now a symbol of his indomitable spirit as he competes in the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

A Life Shaped by Adversity

Mehrzad’s journey to the Paralympics is one of resilience and perseverance. Born with acromegaly, a condition that causes abnormal growth in parts of the body due to excess growth hormone, Mehrzad's life was marked by physical challenges from an early age. A bicycle accident during his teenage years further complicated his health, leading to a severe pelvic injury and stunting the growth of his right leg, which is now six inches shorter than his left.

For five long years, Mehrzad remained confined to his home, overwhelmed by the societal stigma surrounding his condition. He was too embarrassed to step outside, fearing the reactions of those who stared at him with curiosity or discomfort. During this period of isolation, he grappled with feelings of loneliness and despair, uncertain of his future and disconnected from the world outside. It wasn’t until he appeared on an Iranian reality TV show in 2011, where he discussed his daily struggles, that his life began to take a dramatic turn.

The Turning Point: Sitting Volleyball

Mehrzad’s appearance on television caught the attention of Hadi Rezaeigarkani, a coach for Iran’s sitting volleyball team. Recognizing his potential, Rezaeigarkani invited Mehrzad to try out for the sport. The coach’s instincts proved to be spot on, as Mehrzad quickly excelled, using his extraordinary height to his advantage. When seated on the court, Mehrzad’s raised arms reach over six feet, making him a formidable presence, particularly with his powerful spikes.

Joining the Iranian sitting volleyball team transformed Mehrzad’s life. No longer confined by the walls of his home, he found a new purpose and identity in sports. His debut at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro marked the beginning of a successful career. Mehrzad not only helped his team secure a gold medal but also became the tallest athlete to ever compete in the Paralympic Games.

The Paris Challenge: Sleeping on the Floor

As Mehrzad competes in Paris 2024, his journey has not been without its challenges. Despite his status as a two-time Paralympic champion, Mehrzad faces a unique obstacle in Paris: finding a bed that accommodates his extraordinary height. Unlike the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where he had a custom-made bed, Mehrzad is forced to sleep on the floor in Paris. Yet, this inconvenience does not deter him.

"He doesn't have a special bed, but he has the most important aim in his mind," said Coach Rezaeigarkani. "It doesn't matter for him whether he will lay on the floor or he's not going to have enough to eat. He has the mind to become a champion."

A Champion’s Legacy

Iran has a storied history in sitting volleyball, having won seven out of nine tournaments since their debut at the Seoul 1988 Paralympics. Mehrzad, now 36, hopes to add a third gold medal to his collection at Paris 2024, solidifying his legacy as one of the sport's greats. His powerful spikes and commanding presence on the court earned him the title of most valuable player and best spiker at Tokyo 2020, as well as the best spiker at the 2022 World Championships.

Beyond the medals and accolades, Mehrzad's story is one of human potential and the power of sports to change lives. His coach reflects on his transformation: "If you go back to Morteza when he was 12 years old, no one had any consideration for him. But when he became a sitting volleyball player, everyone, all around the world, knows him and respects him."

Mehrzad’s journey from a reclusive teenager, hiding from the world, to a Paralympic champion is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. As he continues to defy the odds in Paris, he not only represents Iran but also serves as an inspiration to millions worldwide, proving that with determination, any obstacle can be overcome.
