When Keshad Johnson gets downhill and finds a lane to the rim, the result can be violent. The Miami Pro League provided plenty of reminders of why Johnson won the 2026 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, but watching him over multiple games revealed something more interesting than another collection of highlight-reel dunks.

Johnson's game is expanding.

From courtside at two Miami Pro League games, the explosiveness was obvious. Johnson attacked the rim with authority, finished above the crowd and produced the kind of rim-rocking plays that have become synonymous with his game. But what stood out was everything happening around those plays.

Johnson showed he was comfortable stepping outside and knocking down the three. He attacked bigger defenders with strong, physical moves instead of simply trying to beat them with athleticism. He showed flashes of being able to create advantages from the perimeter, and his ability to combine size, strength and elite explosiveness makes those developments particularly intriguing.

That evolution is important as Johnson enters another season with the Miami Heat organization.

The 6-foot-6 forward went undrafted after finishing his college career at Arizona, where he had transferred after helping San Diego State reach the 2023 NCAA championship game. At Arizona, Johnson averaged 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds as a senior while shooting 38.7% from three and earning Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honorable mention.

His professional development has followed a similar path.

Johnson has spent significant time moving between Miami and the Sioux Falls Skyforce, using the G League as a place to expand his game and prove he belongs. During his eight regular-season G League games last season, he averaged 17.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.88 blocks and 1.50 steals, while shooting 51.5% from the field and an eye-opening 47.1% from three. He scored in double figures in every one of those games and made multiple threes in seven of them.

That three-point number shouldn't be ignored.

Because when you watch Johnson in person, the athleticism is what immediately grabs your attention. But the ability to consistently stretch the floor could ultimately be what makes his NBA opportunity much bigger.

Miami also gave him opportunities at the NBA level last season. Johnson appeared in 32 games for the Heat, averaging 4.3 points and 1.9 rebounds in 8.7 minutes per game. He scored a season-high 15 points against Charlotte on March 17, 2026, going 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-9 from three while adding five rebounds, three steals and a block.

Then came the dunk contest.

Johnson entered the 2026 NBA Slam Dunk Contest as a second-year player and walked away as the champion, becoming just the third player in Miami Heat history to win the event, joining Derrick Jones Jr. and Harold Miner.

But the dunk contest shouldn't become the entire story of Keshad Johnson.

The dunks are the introduction. The developing perimeter game may be the bigger story.

That was evident watching him in the Miami Pro League.

Against bigger bodies, Johnson didn't look like a player simply trying to live above the rim. He was willing to put the ball on the floor, use his strength and attack. When defenders backed off, he showed the willingness to shoot. When opportunities opened at the rim, the athleticism remained devastating.

That's a potentially valuable combination in today's NBA.

Johnson doesn't need to become a completely different player. He needs to continue sharpening the pieces surrounding what already makes him special.

The athletic foundation is already there.

The defensive versatility is there.

The strength is there.

The explosiveness is unquestionably there.

Now the question is how far the shooting, ball skills and offensive decision-making can develop.

And Miami is giving him another opportunity to find out.

On August 27, the Heat re-signed Johnson to a two-way contract, keeping him within the organization heading into the 2026-27 season.

For an undrafted player, that is another important step in a remarkable professional climb.

Johnson doesn't need anybody to explain the dunking anymore.

We've all seen it.

The next chapter is finding out just how complete Keshad Johnson can become.

And after watching him up close in the Miami Pro League, there is plenty of reason to believe the most interesting part of his game may still be developing.
