Deportivo Alavés, S.A.D., commonly known as Alavés, is a Spanish football club based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Álava, within the Basque Country. Established on July 1, 1920, under the name Sport Friends Club, the club has undergone several name changes before settling on its current identity. Alavés competes in La Liga, Spain's top-tier football league, and recently earned promotion back to La Liga for the 2022–23 season after a dramatic victory over Levante in the promotion playoff final. While not as historically dominant as Basque football powerhouses Athletic Club of Bilbao and Real Sociedad de Futbol, Alavés has carved out its place as the third most successful team in the Basque Country. The club's crowning achievement occurred in 2001 when, in its debut European campaign, Alavés reached the UEFA Cup Final. The final against Liverpool was a thrilling contest that ended 4-4, but Alavés ultimately succumbed to a 5–4 defeat via a golden goal. In addition to its European success, Alavés reached the Copa del Rey final in 2017, facing Barcelona. Despite a valiant effort, Alavés fell short, losing 3–1 to the Catalan giants. The team's iconic blue and white-striped shirts, blue shorts, and white socks make up their home kit, and they play their home matches at the 19,840-seater Mendizorrotza Stadium.
